Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you wanted to know about coffee answered by a real Salvadoran coffee farmer.

Check often as more and more information is uploaded!

Where is this coffee grown?

All coffee is grown in any of the 6 mountain ranges of the Republic of El Salvador.

It is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. El Salvador borders the North Pacific Ocean, Guatemala and Honduras.

How small is El Salvador? It's only 21,041 sq km, about the size of New Jersey, USA.

Is there a difference between one mountain range and the others?

Yes, there is. Each mountain range has specific characteristics regarding topography, altitude, climate, among others. All of these play a role in the flavours that are developed by the different coffee varietals cultivated.

They all have names that relate to indigenous languages or dialects:

  • Alotepec-Metapán
  • Apaneca-Ilamatepec
  • El Bálsamo-Quezaltepec
  • Chicontepec
  • Tecapa-Chinameca
  • Cacahuatique
Do you offer coffee from all 6 mountain ranges?

We currently offer great-quality beans from two mountain ranges: Apaneca-Ilamatepec and Tecapa-Chinameca. The former is on the Western mountains while the other is in the Eastern part of the country.

We will eventually have coffee from all 6 mountain ranges as more farmers partner with us.

Is the coffee certified? If so, what does it certify?

Some of the coffee offered is Rainforest Alliance™ certified.

This certification means that the coffee comes from farms that are managed according to rigorous environmental, social and economic criteria designed to conserve wildlife; safeguard soils and waterways; protect workers, their families and local communities; and increase livelihoods in order to achieve true, long-term sustainability.

You may read more about this here.

Our Rainforest Alliance™ certified coffees are Directo Espresso, Saint George's Roast and San Isidro Labrador's Roast.

Can I choose between whole-bean and ground coffee?

Of course! Just select the right option when making a purchase.

We offer a medium-ground. This is suitable for most coffee machines designed for home use.
